Description

The Error Recognition and Grading Scale (ERGS) was developed by Jan McCleskey, MA, OTR to evaluate the effectiveness of cursive handwriting intervention with students at The Handwriting Clinic, in Plano, Texas. It was designed to be used with students who have previously been taught cursive but need intervention to help with legibility. By collecting pre and post test samples, this scale can be used to measure cursive legibility to provide evidence on the effectiveness of handwriting intervention strategies, which will consequently provide evidence based practice. Pre and post tests can be given using this scale no matter what intervention strategy or program is used! Because of its versatility, it is marketed to therapists and teachers to do pre and post testing to measure the effectiveness of their own handwriting interventions and programs for cursive writing.

The ERGS has been in studies for inter-rater reliability and test-retest reliability. Ongoing research is being done on validity. This prototype clinical edition is marketed so that researchers may complete more reliability studies. Compared to other popular handwriting tests commercially available, the inter-rater reliability is high, and the test-retest is good. This test requires intermediate experience with handwriting intervention to grade. Those that are familiar with First Strokes Cursive Program would be familiar with most of the terms used within this test.

This scale measures handwriting in four subsections, and then produces a composite score.

  1. Handwriting Errors Formation

  2. Touchpoint Errors

  3. Visual Memory Errors

  4. Sizing Errors
